Posted by Phil Hawker on Sunday, June 28, 2020, In : Pictures and Paintings
Welcome back to Summerlands Art! We both realise it's been a long time since we last posted here and we are delighted to be able to finally rectify the situation. This painting by Julia, 'Escape the Chaos', is the first of a number of new paintings which we will be putting up. In these weird and scary times, we can still take pleasure in watching the birds soar above it all. We admire and envy their freedom in the skies. Stay safe and well.

Scarlet Masts

Posted by Julia Hawker on Sunday, February 5, 2017, In : Pictures and Paintings
New picture - 'Scarlet Masts'

Today fishing continues to flourish in Old Town, Hastings, where tall Net Shops are a unique feature. All fifty are black and wooden and originally built to store fishing gear over the winter. Usable space was at a premium, so Net Shops had to expand upwards when extra space was needed.

When sketching on the shingle beach in Old Town, I was also attracted by the glorious shades of red I saw reflected around me and decided to make these a feature.

The original measur...

Sold!

Posted by Julia Hawker on Sunday, July 31, 2016, In : Pictures and Paintings

On 16th July ( a special day in my family) my largest painting yet, 'Standing Proud' was displayed at the Arlington Arts show. Just two weeks later it has been sold to someone local who 'fell in love with it' when she saw it on Facebook. It was lovely to meet her yesterday and to see how her face lit up with pleasure when she actually saw the real painting. Thank you, Claire!

I have quite a few ideas for more paintings of this size. Watch this space but please be patient as they won't appear o...

Coastguard Cottages and the Seven Sisters

Posted by Julia Hawker on Monday, July 25, 2016, In : Pictures and Paintings

Sovereign Shingle

Posted by Phil Hawker on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, In : Pictures and Paintings

Houses and flats for homes; the harbour for watery refuge; wooden groynes to hold the beach in place; Martello Tower no 66 to remind us of more violent, invasive times.

All these features, planned and built by us, are outlived by the natural beauty of the coast. Sea-smoothed pebbles; hardened empty shells and starfish help to remind us of life where sea meets shore.

Ribbons and Ripples

Posted by Julia Hawker on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, In : Pictures and Paintings
I've been inspired by the restless sea and how it affects the homes so close to its edge yet not the creatures beneath the waves. On land, there is turmoil while under the surface of the water, the creatures seem to be unaffected. Add a dash (or lots!) of colour and you have the result - Ribbons and Ripples. I really hope you like it! You can see it here

Eastbourne Pier

Posted by Julia Hawker on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, In : Pictures and Paintings

A few days ago I meant to share a photo of the start of my latest venture - but I got carried away and it's fairly near completion. This time I've used acrylics to try to do justice to Kay Fenton's amazing photo of Eastbourne pier. I Iove Kay's photo especially because of the hint of rainbow. But please don't look for it as it's not there yet!

Bobbing Boats, Tenby

Posted by Julia Hawker on Wednesday, June 24, 2015, In : Pictures and Paintings

A new painting! 'Bobbing Boats, Tenby'

Tenby's colourful beauty never fails to inspire me. This time i've tried to capture the movement I saw within and on the water. The boats were bobbing cheerfully on the choppy surface of the sea and I could glimpse many pinkish fish below the surface.

Julia's latest painting

Posted by Julia Hawker on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, In : Pictures and Paintings
And here it is, finished at last, my latest painting, called 'Swim To Greet the Sun'. I do hope you like it. I think it's the most colourful one I've painted. The sun beams down on the silent town; only the underwater creatures seem to notice the golden rays piercing the surface of the sea. They swarm towards the light to find ... ?

It was bought after being spotted, very much incomplete, on Facebook. On Sunday, Phil and I had the great pleasure of delivering it to its new owner. Luckily, she ...

First two in a series of four 3D pictures
