Escape the Chaos

Posted by Phil Hawker on Sunday, June 28, 2020, In : Pictures and Paintings
Welcome back to Summerlands Art! We both realise it's been a long time since we last posted here and we are delighted to be able to finally rectify the situation. This painting by Julia, 'Escape the Chaos', is the first of a number of new paintings which we will be putting up. In these weird and scary times, we can still take pleasure in watching the birds soar above it all. We admire and envy their freedom in the skies. Stay safe and well.

Scarlet Masts

Posted by Julia Hawker on Sunday, February 5, 2017, In : Pictures and Paintings
New picture - 'Scarlet Masts'

Today fishing continues to flourish in Old Town, Hastings, where tall Net Shops are a unique feature. All fifty are black and wooden and originally built to store fishing gear over the winter. Usable space was at a premium, so Net Shops had to expand upwards when extra space was needed.

When sketching on the shingle beach in Old Town, I was also attracted by the glorious shades of red I saw reflected around me and decided to make these a feature.

The original measur...

Sovereign Shingle

Posted by Phil Hawker on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, In : Pictures and Paintings

Houses and flats for homes; the harbour for watery refuge; wooden groynes to hold the beach in place; Martello Tower no 66 to remind us of more violent, invasive times.

All these features, planned and built by us, are outlived by the natural beauty of the coast. Sea-smoothed pebbles; hardened empty shells and starfish help to remind us of life where sea meets shore.

Eastbourne Pier

Posted by Julia Hawker on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, In : Pictures and Paintings

A few days ago I meant to share a photo of the start of my latest venture - but I got carried away and it's fairly near completion. This time I've used acrylics to try to do justice to Kay Fenton's amazing photo of Eastbourne pier. I Iove Kay's photo especially because of the hint of rainbow. But please don't look for it as it's not there yet!

Julia's latest painting

Posted by Julia Hawker on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, In : Pictures and Paintings
And here it is, finished at last, my latest painting, called 'Swim To Greet the Sun'. I do hope you like it. I think it's the most colourful one I've painted. The sun beams down on the silent town; only the underwater creatures seem to notice the golden rays piercing the surface of the sea. They swarm towards the light to find ... ?

It was bought after being spotted, very much incomplete, on Facebook. On Sunday, Phil and I had the great pleasure of delivering it to its new owner. Luckily, she ...

Family name picture commission completed!

Posted by Julia on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, In : Name Designs
I'm very excited that the family name picture is completed and successfully delivered to its commissioner, Rachel, who has given her kind permission for us to share it. She loves it, as do the rest of the family - phew! The picture itself is 16" x 12" and is fully mounted and framed as the customer ordered. I used pen, gloriously bright watercolour dyes and just a few watercolour paints, with iridescent embellishment to add a soft sheen and shimmer to chosen sections. Rachel tells me that the...

St Peter Port Harbour

Posted by Phil Hawker on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, In : Pictures and Paintings
As any Guern knows, the town harbour is the most beautiful in the world! There is nothing like the wonderful feeling of home, as I sail into its safe arms, while the sun rises over Herm and Sark, bathing the buildings and the sea in translucent light. Ahhh! - Julia x
